Dear Candidate,
Thank you for your interest in working with us at Highline College. The college actively promotes
and supports a learning environment which ensures social justice, mutual respect,
understanding, civility, and nonviolence. As part of our commitment to upholding these values,
we ask all candidates to participate in preparing an equity statement as part of their
application materials. Through the process of reviewing these statements, the college seeks to
employ candidates who best reflect these values.
EQUITY QUESTION (Suggested length is 300-600 words, essay format or short
answer response): (1) What is your understanding and/or definition of systemic
inequities, as it relates to racism, sexism, ableism, education access, etc?
(2) What has been your biggest challenge in existing or working in a system that
may perpetuate inequity ? (3) If you are hired for this position, what do you
believe your role will be in confronting these inequities?
As a way of providing transparency for candidates, we provided
some context on how these statements are evaluated. Screening Committees
will review candidate submissions for statements that:
1. Provide clear examples and/or definitions of systemic inequities
2. Demonstrate awareness of personal identity & positionality, providing openness
and willingness to learn and be challenged in areas of privilege when appropriate
3. When relevant, connects definition and examples back to candidate’s personal and
professional experience/identity
4. Provide relevant examples of inequities and how they may impact the Highline community
5. Connect Highline role to the confronting of inequity
